Photographer Andrew Putter

I stumbled across the above striking black and white photographic image on Pinterest recently, which lead me to the archives of the South African based Stevenson gallery.

Titled Native Work, this collection of twenty-one black and white photographic portraits by Andrew Putter showcases Capetonians in tribal or traditional costume in the style of iconic Irish / South African ethnographic photographer Alfred Martin Duggan-Cronin. The black and white portraits are complimented with twenty-one colour versions of the same subjects dressed in clothing based on how they see themselves today.

To view this compelling photographic series, including the color portraits, visit the Stevenson gallery archive.
