When I visited Durban last year I stayed at a cafe that offered boutique accommodation [The Concierge] as part of its set up; a Melbourne girl does need to be close to her daily coffee you know! Aptly named the Freedom Cafe it is tucked away just out of the city centre in Greyville.
The cafe is cleverly designed using shipping containers; one painted bright red provides cosy indoor table seating whilst a second glass container serves as the counter and barista area complete with African stomper stools.
You can see shipping containers used as simple homes and shops all through Africa, however the design of the Freedom Cafe has taken this over-sized metal packing box to a whole new level. Inspired to find more shipping container design in Africa my search uncovered a Pretoria East residence and a recycle bike shop in Ghana.
