Karo Girl by David Ballam
- The Story
The Lower Omo Valley is a crossroad for humans migrating over millennia from Somalia, Kenya and Sudan. This small area in Ethiopia's southwest is home to some of Africa’s most fascinating tribes, the Hamar, Suri, Mursi, Karo and Arbore. Colourful jewellery, animal skins, clay lip plates, body paint and scarring are used by the tribes to adorn themselves.
This 80 x 120cm portrait is printed on 380 gsm, UV resistant white matt cotton canvas and features the photographers digital signature. A high resolution coating ensures the photograph is a well-contrasted, high resolution reproduction image. Stretched with a raw Australian oak frame (no glass).
We love these framed fine art photographic tribal portraits! A striking statement mounted on the wall or leaning from a console table or sideboard. Large enough to holds its own or pair it with another of David’s portraits.

PRINTED IN SOUTH AFRICA / FRAMED IN AUSTRALIA
David Ballam was born and schooled in Johannesburg, South Africa. He first attended university in Cape Town but later moved to Rhodes University in the Eastern Cape.
He was introduced to the camera by Obie Oberholzer and in 2004 gained his Fine Art Degree with Honours in photography. David returned to Johannesburg and after a number of years experience in the commercial world of photography, reverted his attention back to his Fine Art roots.
Intrigued and inspired by new faces, places, cultures and customs David focuses his attention on taking any opportunity to travel and explore the African landscape, finding and creating images that transcend the subject matter into Fine Art prints. His photography often creates a dichotomy between the romantic African landscape and the harshness and crudeness of the context in which he shoots.
